What is HOWL?
HOWL stands for Healthy Options for a Wellness Lifestyle. We are a group of Michigan Tech students who work for the University’s Coordinator of Student Health and Wellness and all of Counseling and Wellness Services. We are dedicated to providing wellness information and activities to our peers. We have been around for over twelve years, but you might know us as POWER students (Peers Offering Wellness Education Resources).

What does HOWL do?
We educate peers about health and wellness issues in various ways. We give interactive presentations and workshops covering many health and wellness-related topics. We help plan, market and deliver several events on campus, including The Bigfoot Snowshoe Event, Week of Wellness, How the Health are You? (health fair), Stress-Free Finals Activities, Annual Blood Drive vs. NMU, and several vaccine clinics. Our primary goal is to promote wellness education and healthy lifestyles on campus, and to help students succeed at Michigan Tech .

We give our presentations to a wide variety of groups, including

  • Academic classes
  • Fraternities
  • Sororities
  • Residence Halls
  • Student Clubs
  • Off-Campus Groups

We offer presentations and workshops on a range of topics, including the following:

    • General health and wellness for college students
    • Nutrition and healthy eating habits
    • Physical activity and lifetime fitness
    • Alcohol education and risk reduction
    • Drug abuse prevention
    • Relationship violence and date rape education and prevention
    • Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) awareness
    • Eating disorders and disordered eating education and prevention
    • Sexual health education and promotion
    • Stress and time management tips and techniques
    • Study skills
    • Assertiveness Training

If there are other topics of interest for your group, just let us know…we work to meet the needs of any group! Our presentations can be formal or informal, depending on the audience. We can present for almost any length of time. We are able to come to you for the presentation, or for small audiences, Counseling and Wellness Services’ Relaxation Room is a cozy spot to consider.

To request a presentation or workshop on any wellness-related topic, contact the Coordinator of Student Health and Wellness at 906-487-2538 or email wellness@mtu.edu
